Goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann, the son of the former forward of the German national team and head coach of the United States national team, Jürgen Klinsmann, is recovering from a neck fracture suffered on Saturday during a match played for the Italian second division team Cesena, writes the British newspaper Guardian.
The former United States youth international, 29, was stretchered off the pitch wearing a cervical collar after a collision with a Palermo player and taken to a hospital in the Sicilian capital.
The club said in a statement that initial tests revealed “a fracture of the first cervical vertebra” and a cut to the back of the head. He is to undergo further tests by a specialist neurosurgeon, the club added.
Klinsmann posted on Instagram that his season was over and thanked the fans in Cesena and Palermo “for their warm wishes” as well as “friends and family who have supported me in the last few days”.
Klinsmann played briefly with the Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS and was called up to the United States national team at the junior level.
