Jonathan, the son of former German international Jurgen Klinsmann, suffered a serious injury in the cervical area during the Serie B match that Cesena lost in Palermo (0-2).

In the final seconds of the game, the 29-year-old goalkeeper collided with Filippo Ranocchia and suffered a heavy blow to the head. He finished the match on the field, but immediately after the final whistle he was taken to the hospital.

Initially it was thought that the injury was not a serious one, but the verdict received after the medical check-up to which he was subjected is shocking and worrying. Cesena announced today that, in addition to the cranial trauma suffered, Jonathan Klinsmann also suffered a cervical vertebra fracture!

Coach Marco De Marchi: “The road to recovery will be long”

The club also stated that Klinsmann jr will undergo further investigations and a neurosurgical consultation. And the Italian press suggests that a quick return to the playing field is practically out of the question.

The concern about Klinsmann jr is shared by his coach Marco De Marchi. “The road to recovery will be long” – admitted the Cesena technician.

The injury falls for the 29-year-old goalkeeper at a time when he was enjoying the best period of his career. Since his transfer to Italy in 2024, the Munich-born American has established himself as AC Cesena's number one goalkeeper.

Cesena lost Jonathan Klinsmann in a decisive period of the 2025 – 2026 season

Previously, Klinsmann had performed without much success for clubs such as Hertha BSC, FC St. Gallen and LA Galaxy. And for Cesena, his absence is a serious blow.

Being in 8th place in Serie B, Cesena is fighting in the last stages to stay in the 3-8 position zone, in order to participate in the play-offs after which the 3rd promoted in Serie A will be established at the end of the season.
