During the inspection, fruits with signs of damage by the quarantine pest were identified. The selected samples were sent for research to the laboratory of the Krasnoyarsk branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “TsK Agroindustrial Complex”. As a result During research in tomatoes, experts discovered the South American tomato moth.
“In order to prevent the threat of harm to agriculture and the economy of the region, a person who imported products infected with a dangerous pest was issued a notice of the need to take phytosanitary measures. At the owner’s choice, the tomatoes were treated with drugs approved for use that are safe for humans,” said the regional Rosselkhoznadzor.
The department recalled that the South American tomato moth is a dangerous quarantine pest that damages and reduces the yield of tomatoes in open and closed ground by 80-100%. This pest is subject to quarantine in many countries and is included in the list of quarantine objects of the Eurasian Economic Union.
In addition, pest control is difficult because, unlike many other quarantine objects, the South American tomato moth practically does not respond to insecticides. It becomes addictive extremely quickly.
