This is why bananas need to be washed: you can’t even imagine what’s in there – Rospotrebnadzor’s explanation

Many consumers are sure that fruits with peels, such as bananas, tangerines or kiwis, do not need to be washed – we still remove the peel from them. Meanwhile, the press service of Rospotrebnadzor said that bananas must be washed before consumption. And here's why.

Fruit skins may contain invisible contaminants, dangerous chemicals, and pathogenic bacteria. The technology that promotes ripening and the methods of transporting bananas do not always meet safety requirements. Thus, the skin may contain pesticides and chemicals used during cultivation and processing, as well as pathogenic bacteria, including E. coli.

As the department told RIA Novosti (18+), when peeling an unwashed banana, we transfer all the dirt and harmful microorganisms through our hands to the pulp, and therefore into the mouth.

“The consequences can be the most unpleasant – from a banal intestinal disorder to serious infectious diseases,” the press service said.

Meanwhile, a washed banana is a healthy fruit containing fiber, potassium, magnesium, manganese, vitamins A, B6 and C. It also contains antioxidants and substances that cause a surge of strength and a feeling of joy. Therefore, you can and should eat bananas if there are no contraindications, but do not forget to wash them thoroughly before eating each time.
