Present in Bistrița, where the Romanian women's national handball team plays on Sunday, March 8, the return match against Slovakia in the EHF Euro Cup, Constantin Din, the president of the Romanian Handball Federation, spoke about the possibility of the national handball matches being broadcast on television, not only on Voyo, and also addressed the subject of the petition made by the followers of this sport in Romaniawhich require the matches to be broadcast on TV stations.
After the victory achieved on Thursday, March 5, in Slovakia, score 32-26Romania expects another favorable result in the EHF Euro Cup, a recently established competition in which the tricolors play because they are already qualified for the European Championship in December 2026.
The duel with Slovakia will take place on Sunday, March 8, at 19:00, in the Teraplast Arena in Bistrita. On this occasion, the Romanian Handball Federation organized a press conference in which they participated Constantin Din, FRH president, Ovidiu Mihăilă, coach of the women's national team, players Alexandra Szoke, Yaroslava Burlachenko and Alisia Boiciuc and the mayor of Bistrița, Gabriel Lazany.
Constantin Din, FRH president: “I want this sport to be followed as much as possible”
In the last part of the conference, Constantin Din was asked by a representative of the local media if the Romanian Handball Federation can take some steps so that the matches of the national teams can be watched on the television stations of the PRO TV trust.
Earlier this year, PRO TV, which holds the television rights to the final handball tournaments until 2031, decided to broadcast the European Men's Handball Championship only on the Voyo platform.
The decision of the television trust triggered a reaction in the community of handball lovers in Romania, who made a petition and demanded that things change and that the matches of the Romanian national team can be watched, throughout the country, on television.
Constantin Din explained that FRH cannot influence PRO TV's decision, because the agreement was signed directly between the television trust and the European Handball Federation or the International Handball Federation.
As president of the Romanian Handball Federation, I really want this sport to be followed as much as possible, by as many people in Romania as possible. It is clear that we want handball matches to be televised.
The situation seems simple, but it is a bit complicated. The TV rights of these major competitions, such as the European Championship, the World Championship or the Olympic Games, belong to the European and International Federation.
Our partner is PRO TV and it is a coincidence that PRO TV bought the TV rights from these two federations, for the European and World Championships. We, as national federations, cannot intervene. It is a contract between the EHF and the IHF and a commercial company. It is a contract between two parties
– Constantin Din, president of the Romanian Handball Federation
Constantin Din: “We are trying to convince PRO TV that the matches, at least of the national teams, be broadcast on a television station”
The FRH president was also asked about the petition signed by more than 6,000 people, calling for national matches and final tournaments to be televised.
“It is an obvious thing that we all want the matches to be televised. We have had discussions, we are trying to convince our partner for December, we are trying to convince them that the matches, at least of the national teams, will be broadcast on a television stationDin replied.
“It's still being discussed, it's still being negotiated. I repeat, the rights are bought by them, they decide what to do with their product,” the FRH president continued.
Constantin Din stated that, in this season of the Flower League, PRO TV has the obligation to broadcast the matches on Pro Arena, but this agreement expires at the end of the season.
“It expires at the end of the championship, after which another contract is made. It can be PRO TV, it can be another television. Let's see what interests there are and what we can get. It is clear that we, for handball, need as many, as good partners as possible and to promote Romanian handball together. We want to be present, as much as possible, on all televisions in Romania. This is the goal. Let's see if we manage to fulfill it”, concluded Constantin Din.
In December of this year, Romania will be one of the hosts of the European Women's Handball Championship, with several groups being organized in Cluj-Napoca and Oradea.
