The information provided shows that the officer used AI to edit reports from the so-called digital special operations. The analysis allowed researchers to discover a network that includes hundreds of operators and thousands of fake social media accounts.

China's impersonation and disinformation
The operators allegedly impersonated American immigration officials to intimidate activists abroad. In some cases obituaries and photos of tombstones were prepared to fake the death of critics of the authorities in Beijing. Details also revealed plans for a disinformation campaign against Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
Reports sent to ChatGPT included mentions of the use of Chinese artificial intelligence models, including the DeepSeek system.
Digital repression
“This is what modern Chinese transnational repression looks like. It's not just about digital trolling, it's activities on an industrial scale” – said Ben Nimmo, chief investigator at OpenAI, quoted by CNN. In his opinion, the goal was to simultaneously attack critics of the Chinese Communist Party in many countries.

The case came to light at a time of intensifying technological competition between the United States and China. Beijing has been developing its censorship apparatus for years, but this case is one of the most striking examples of the use of Western technologies to suppress criticism abroad.
OpenAI informed about blocking the user's account. Analysts emphasize, however, that the disclosed operation is only a fragment of a broader information war in which the stake is control over the global narrative in the world's two largest economies.
