Prosecutor General and Head of the Ministry of Justice Waldemar Żurek announced that a team has been assembled to investigate Polish aspects of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, which will consist of two parts: analytical and investigative. He announced that prosecutors will be able to initiate proceedings and apply to the US for documents.

On Wednesday, on Radio Zet, Żurek was asked about the team that will deal with the Polish aspects of the Epstein scandal. The decision to create it was announced last week by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who announced that the team would examine, among others, possible cases of child abuse, as well as the issue of the involvement of Russian services.
– I have a fully assembled team, but it must be two teams that will work together at some point. An analytical team that will analyze the documents that have already appeared. And there must be an investigative team, i.e. prosecutors who will have the same functions as any prosecutor in an investigation – replied Żurek.
The minister explained that the team of prosecutors will have the competence to initiate proceedings, conduct hearings and apply – under international legal assistance – to the United States Department of Justice for the issuance of documents relating to the scandal that are not available on the Internet.
When asked whether he was concerned that the dispute between the United States ambassador to Poland, Thomas Rose, and the Speaker of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, might affect the consideration by the US authorities of the application prepared by Poland, the prosecutor general emphasized that appropriate procedures would be applied at this stage. – (…) There are institutions there, in the United States, that will work. We have signed cooperation agreements with these institutions in investigations. I don't think anyone would want to deny us the documents, said Żurek.
He also added that in the event of refusal, Poland will use the diplomatic route and publicize the case, pointing to the existing cooperation agreements in investigations.
Żurek also reminded that the aim of the team's activities is to investigate the Polish aspects of the scandal, including determining whether there were any victims or people from Poland deriving financial benefits in the case. – As the prosecutor general and head of this team, I would like to see these documents (…) – noted Żurek.
At the end of January, the US Department of Justice published approximately 3 million pages of documents from the case files of the late American financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who had contacts with many wealthy and influential people from around the world. There are also Polish threads in the documents. (PAP)
