More and more teenage girls end up in the hospital because of false eyelashes. Doctors sound the alarm

More and more teenage girls end up in prisons with serious eye problems after using false eyelashes applied with glue bought online or in fast-fashion stores. Doctors talk about corneal burns, eye infections and severe allergic reactions, which can have long-term consequences on vision.

Emergency rooms in several cities have reported an increasing number of young women presenting with red, swollen eyes, intense pain and blurred vision. In some cases, the eyelash glue went directly onto the cornea, causing serious damage that required emergency treatment and sometimes even hospitalization.
Specialists point out that these apparently harmless products can have serious health effects, especially when used incorrectly or without supervision.
Eyelash glue can cause lifelong damage
Doctors explain that eyelash adhesives contain irritating chemicals, such as cyanoacrylate or formaldehyde, which can trigger severe allergic reactions. The eye area is extremely sensitive, and even a small amount of glue can cause chemical burns, severe conjunctivitis or eye infections.
The risk is even greater for teenage girls, who apply their lashes at home, following tutorials on social media, without knowing the real dangers.
Products from online, without clear labels and without guarantees
Doctors point out that many of the products bought online do not have labels translated into Romanian and do not offer any guarantee that they comply with European safety standards. Under these conditions, users do not know what substances they are actually applying near the eyes.
“We see huge pressure on very young girls to look a certain way. Excessive make-up and false eyelashes have become the norm at 13-14, but the risks are being ignored“, warn the doctors.
When to go to the doctor urgently
Experts advise parents to talk openly with teenagers about the risks of using cosmetics and avoid cheap or untested eyelash glue. It is also important to choose only dermatologically and ophthalmologically tested products.
In case of the appearance of any discomfort – stinging, pain, redness or excessive tearing – emergency presentation to the doctor is essential, to prevent complications that can affect vision in the long term.
