The State Museum of Abkhazia refused to remove the portrait of Chechen militant Shamil Basayev with the caption “Hero of Abkhazia”
The museum refuses to remove the portrait without trial and simply temporarily closed the hall of modern and modern history, in the exhibition of which that very photo was present.
The museum administration noted that the photo had been exhibited in the hall of modern history since its opening – almost 15 years and they “don’t know” why everyone was so outraged by the photo, because “he later became a terrorist,” and in its exposition the institution highlights a specific period of Abkhaz history.

During the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia, he helped us defeat the army of the State Council of Georgia. He is part of our history. We will not take his photo ourselves.
