Manchester United have tonight officially announced the appointment of Michael Carrick (44) as head coach, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim more than a week ago. The former Red Devils midfielder takes over from interim Darren Fletcher.

Carrick, a player at Manchester United between 2006-2018, returns to the technical bench of the club where he wrote history as a footballer. In recent days there has been speculation regarding a possible return of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Incidentally, Carrick was the Norwegian's second in command between 2018 and 2021.

The club released an official statement in which United's new manager gave his first thoughts:

It is an honor to have the responsibility of managing Manchester United.
I know what it means to succeed here and my aim is to help the players reach the standards this incredible club demands.

I have complete confidence in the talent, dedication and ability of this group to succeed.
We still have a lot to fight for this season and we are ready to give the fans the performances they deserve.

– said Carick, in a statement issued by the club

Jason Wilcox, the club's sporting director, explained the decision:

Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it means to win at Manchester United. He is ready to lead this talented and determined group for the remainder of the season as we continue to build a club capable of continued success.”

The journey of Michael Carrick

After his time on Manchester United's staff, Carrick was head coach at Middlesbrough for three years between 2022 and 2025, averaging 1.57 points per game.

As a professional footballer, the former defensive midfielder played for West Ham, Swindon Town, Birmingham and Tottenham before making the move to Manchester United between 2006 and 2018, during which time he recorded 24 goals and 35 assists in 464 official matches, winning a Champions League, a Europa League trophy and no less than 5 Premier League titles.
