Newcastle – Manchester City, tough match in the semi-finals of the English League Cup
Newcastle are coming off the back of a solid run in the Premier League, with three straight wins before the tie in the last leg. “Coțofenele” won against Leeds, score 4-3, passed Crystal Palace, 2-0, and prevailed away at Burnley, 3-1.
The only failure in the last five games was against Manchester United, 0-1. In their most recent game, Newcastle were held to a spectacular 3-3 draw by Bournemouth in the FA Cup but progressed on penalties.
On the other hand, Manchester City is going through a wobbly period. The champions ticked off three consecutive draws in the Premier League, before the decisive success in the FA Cup, 10-1 with Exeter. The Citizens drew with Brighton 1-1, Chelsea 1-1 and Sunderland 0-0, and previously beat Nottingham Forest 2-1.
The last head-to-head meeting between the two teams took place on 22 November 2025 in the Premier League, when Newcastle won 2-1. Previously, in February 2025, the “citizens” won categorically, score 4-0, also in a championship match.
In the last five direct duels, the record is perfectly balanced. Manchester City has two wins, Newcastle has, in turn, two successes, and one game ended in a draw. The last time the two met in a knockout competition was in March 2024 in the FA Cup, when Manchester City won 2-0.
