Tension is growing in the Middle East. This could be a flashpoint in 2026.

Why is the situation in Iran so important?

Iran's decisions may have a real impact on the situation in the Middle East and global security. According to the Eurasia Review think-tank, Iran's nuclear and strategic posture raises fears of a renewed attack by Israel. At the same time, at the end of December the situation inside the country worsened. At least three people were killed and several dozen injured in the wave of protests.

What has happened in recent days?

In Iran, at the end of December 2025, there was a wave of protests initiated by shopkeepers who were dissatisfied with the prices (since December 2024, food prices have increased by over 70%). Protests spread across much of the country. Within days, they spread to 17 of Iran's 31 provinces, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Young people take to the streets of cities, chanting slogans “death to Khamenei” [Ali Chamenei — najwyższy przywódca Iranu]there are attacks on the headquarters of the services, e.g. on a police station in the western province of Lorestan, three people were killed and 17 were injured. In response to the protests, pro-government rallies are also organized, spreading anti-American and anti-Israel slogans.

What is the reason for the protests?

Public concern is raised by the economic crisis in Iran, which has intensified since the resumption of international sanctions against this country in connection with Tehran's nuclear program. There are frequent power outages and water shortages. Inflation and food prices are rising.

What do other countries say?

Iran's adamant attitude towards the IAEA raises the risk of another Israeli attack on Iran. Previously, such an attack took place in June 2025. Israel then gave Iran an ultimatum, demanding that it limit the development of its nuclear program. US President Donald Trump has already openly announced support for Israel in the event of a possible attack. “A second Israeli attack on Iran is a real option,” writes Eurasia Review.
