The prosecutors requested the preventive arrest of Simona Stan, but the Bucharest Court rejected the request and ordered her to be placed under house arrest. Another woman involved in the same case, Mariana Popa, is being investigated under judicial control. The two were detained on Thursday, and the next day they were presented to the court.

How the cheating scheme worked

According to the investigators, between January 2023 and July 2024, Simona Stan and her accomplice allegedly misled several people, promising them the purchase of cars and real estate at favorable prices. “In the case of the two defendants, it was held that, between January 2023 and July 2024, they misled six injured persons regarding the veracity of offers to purchase several cars and real estate from the heritage of some commercial companies, using unreal qualities (…), causing the victims to pay the claimed amounts of money, totaling the value of 631,600 euros, 2,000 dollars and 1,098,540 lei, without any of these injured persons taking possession of the promised goods“, it is stated in a press release from the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Court.

False promises and ringing names

To convince their victims, the two women would have presented themselves as “influential people” who worked at major oil companies, such as OMV Petrom and Transpeco Logistic & Distribution. In addition, Simona Stan would have invoked connections with her sister, Carmen Dan, but also with the former financier of the Dinamo Bucharest club, Cristi Borcea, in order to strengthen her credibility.

Damage and measures taken by prosecutors

The total damage claimed by the victims exceeds 1.3 million euros. In order to recover the damages, the prosecutors ordered the seizure of all the movable and immovable assets of the defendants.

The investigation is ongoing, and Simona Stan will remain under house arrest for the next 30 days.

The hearing of former minister Carmen Dan

In the context of this file, Carmen Dan was heard on Thursday morning, October 16, at the Capital Police, as a witness. Upon exiting the hearings, she stated: “I came to give statements as a witness and to say about the facts allegedly committed in the file, what I know, what I did.”

The former minister emphasized that she had no knowledge of her sister's activities and that she would have used her name to gain credibility. “I sent her to the investigative bodies to declare everything that happened. They are the only ones in a position to determine the degree of guilt of each one”Carmen Dan added.

She also stated that, from the accounts of the officers investigating the case, it emerged that her sister used the connection she has with the former minister to gain credibility. “At the end of the day, prosecutors are the ones who decide each person's degree of guilt, and how you lay, how you sleep, applies to everyone. I have never made any effort for anyone to help in such a situation“, concluded Carmen Dan.
