Video Donald Trump indicates an analgesic widely used as a cause of autism: “Do not take paracetamol if you are pregnant. Do not give children”

US President Donald Trump said on Monday, in an announcement at the White House, that there is a connection between the use of a popular analgesic without a prescription, Tylenol (which contains Paracetamol), and the development of autism, during pregnancy, a statement challenged by many doctors, writes Reuters.

“Avoid taking” Paracetamol, the US president repeated during an event at the White House dedicated to autism, a complex disorder with a very broad spectrum and whose origin has long been the object of medical research.

Trump also suggested the use of leukorine, a form of folic acid, as a treatment for the symptoms of autism.

Prior to Donald Trump's announcement, FDA (US food and medicine administration), the American regulatory authority in the field, has published a notification in the federal register, approving a version of this medicine – Leukovorin – produced by GSK and which had previously retired. The FDA approved the drug for a condition associated with autism.

Wall Street Journal has recently written that the US government intends to announce that the use of popular Tylenol, an analgesic produced by Kenvue and available without a prescription, by pregnant women can be associated with autism, contrary to medical guides that say it is certain to use.

The active ingredient in Tylenol is paracetamol – an analgesic used and widely recommended.

President Donald Trump was accompanied to the press conference by US Secretary for Health, Robert Kennedy JR, and the administrator of Medicare and Medicaid services.

According to the annuity made by the US President, the consumption of paracetamol (acetaminophen) by pregnant women is “associated with a very high risk” of developing autism in children.

“So it's not good to take Tylenol. I say it. It's not good,” Trump said. “And you should not give the child Tylenol every time he receives an injection,” he added.

“In other countries, such as Cuba, I heard, there is no Tylenol, because they cannot afford to buy it. Well, there are almost no cases of autism (there),” Trump said.

“I strongly recommend avoiding Tylenol consumption, unless absolutely necessary.” “Do not take Tylenol. Do not give the children either,” the US president said.

“There is no disadvantage if you resist and do not take this medicine,” Donald Trump said.

Trump states that there is no “no reason” for babies to be vaccinated against hepatitis B

Donald Trump has also pleaded for the modification of the American children vaccination calendar, claiming especially that there is no “reason” for vaccination of infants against hepatitis B, thus echoing anti-vaccination theories, writes AFP.

“Hepatitis B is transmitted sexually. There is no reason to vaccinate against hepatitis B a baby who was just born. I would say to wait until this baby is 12 years old and is well developed, then to vaccinate him against hepatitis B,” said the Republican President during the White House Conference.

Vaccination of newborns against hepatitis B is recommended in the United States, as in many other countries, especially because of the possibility that it is infected by the mother during pregnancy or birth.

President Donald Trump was expected to make this spectacular announcement on Monday about what he claims would be a cause of autism, an announcement that worries specialists in this complex disorder that affects neurological development, AFP notes.

“I think I found an answer” to the question “How is this,” the Republican president said in a statement made on Sunday, in Arizona, insisting that the next announcement will be “one of the most important” he has ever made.

Autism diagnoses in the United States have increased significantly since 2000, intensifying the public concern. Until 2020, the rate of autism in the US in 8 -year -olds was 1 to 36, or 2.77%, increasing from 2.27% in 2018 and 0.66% in 2000, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Paracetamol, incriminated

In the spring of this year, the US Secretary for Health, Robert Kennedy Jr., promised to identify “until September” the causes of autism, a commitment that profoundly worries the medicine experts, given the complexity of the subject and the public statements of this American minister, a skeptic regarding the vaccines, which has distributed this theme in the past.

Autism is a complex disorder with a very broad spectrum, whose origin has been subject to medical research for a long time. Although genetics play an important role, several factors have been highlighted by the environment in which people diagnosed, such as neuroinflammation and administration of certain drugs, such as Depakine antiepileptic during pregnancy.

According to US press, authorities in the United States are preparing to incriminate paracetamol (acetaminophen) on Monday by pregnant women.

This active ingredient is present in highly used analgesics, such as Doliprane, Dafalgan and Tylenol (in the United States and Canada), and is recommended for pregnant women or fever, in the context in which other drugs such as Aspirin or ibuprofen are contraindicated, especially in the last part of pregnancy.

“Science is much more nuanced and uncertain”

This statement “is not new at all,” emphasizes David Mandell, professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. “It is based on scientific works already published. It is an analysis of this scientific literature and it is a wrong analysis,” he added.

The question of the existence of a connection between paracetamol and the appearance of neurological development disorders in children has been the subject of numerous studies in recent years, with divergent results.

A large study conducted on more than 2 million children and published in 2024 in the prestigious medical journal The Journal of the American Medical Association (Jama) excluded this risk. However, in the summer of this year, an analysis of previous studies has reached an opposite conclusion, its authors, however, warning that additional studies are needed to confirm this possible implication.

One of the difficulties encountered by the researchers comes from the fact that it is difficult to distinguish the effects of administering this medicine from the reasons for being administered, explained David Mandell.

“It is known that fever (…) can increase the risk of mental delay and disorders of neurological development. Therefore, we must be very cautious when trying to determine which of these two factors is responsible for increasing the risk of autism,” he warned.

To publicly establish a connection between this medicine and autism would be “extremely irresponsible and potentially dangerous”, at the beginning of September dozens of American scientists specialized in autism, after the daily Street Journal evoked this hypothesis.

“Science is much more nuanced and uncertain,” they insisted, warning that such an announcement would sow “confusion and fear.”

Following this information in the press, the actions of the US pharmaceutical group Kenvue, which sell Tylenol, dropped 6.46%Monday, reaching $ 17.16, around 4:05 pm GMT.
